Let's Make A MESS

Be Compassionate. Be Capable.

What is MESS?

MESS stands for Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Support.

We are a nonprofit training group that offers Basic, Advanced, and Train-the-Trainer courses that equip Helpers to respond with clarity and compassion to individuals in distress.

Why MESS Training?

Bridge the Gap

MESS training bridges the gap between good intentions and skilled response—turning caring hearts into confident Helpers, by equipping them to stand where psychology meets spirituality and bring care that connects both mind and spirit.

A kind of X-Ray Vision

MESS training gives Helpers a kind of “x-ray vision”— that is, the ability to see beyond the presenting problem to the deeper source of distress that grieves beneath the surface.

Sharpen Current Skills

MESS training doesn’t replace previous experience or education—it builds on it. Helpers strengthen the natural skills already in use to listen, care, and connect, and learn to apply them with greater clarity in moments of distress.

Who We Train?

MESS delivers training intentionally to clergy, lay leaders, and community responders – those already on the front lines of care.

These professionals are often called first when individuals, families, groups, and communities struggle with overwhelming grief, stress, and crisis.

How MESS Works

Every MESS training has our 6-Part Protocol© at it’s core.  This protocol is a simple yet powerful guide that brings structure to compassion – – slowing the Helper down—on purpose—so the person’s hurt is heard before help is offered.

This intentional pacing transforms conversation from “fixing” to connecting.

Each part of the protocol builds upon the last, leading the Helper step-by-step through a compassionate process and engaging specific skills at every stage.

What People Are Saying

I have to say your class was great. I’ve been doing this for a long time but I learned so much and was even challenged to make changes in my old school approach.

I promise you, you will not get bored!  I learned so much – more than I thought I would in just two and a half days!  I feel better equipped now to support people going through it.  Thanks again!

Valerie

Stephen's Minister

I entered the class weary of effectiveness and time and money spent. ….I do that with every class entered. Quickly I realized how very impressed I was with this class. The material presented was professional and applicable with practice. The more we practiced the easier the material became.  Little did I know that within 16hrs after the class ended I would apply (with ease, confidence and much success) the material learned in a distressed situation.  What flowed from my mouth, in retrospect, was exactly what we were taught and practiced in class. Thank-you for helping me help someone who was hurting hurt less and feel better about themselves and their crisis. I feel 100% comfortable ZOOM-ing any class with these folks!

MESS Basic

Brilliant course. The skills are things we know but when shown how to effectively coordinate those skills, the outcome is more powerful.

This training was a great experience and really showed me how to listen and analyze what is going on when someone is going through an emotional stressful event.
