Why Approval Matters

More Than Permission to Teach

Approved MESS Instructors are entrusted with MESS Basic and the preparation of Helpers who may be invited into deeply vulnerable moments. That trust calls for helping skill, sound judgment, instructional readiness, and alignment with the MESS helping posture.

Approved Instructors do more than present content. They help form compassionate, capable Helpers.

The Details

What You Really Want to Know

You understand why building training capacity matters. Here are the practical answers you need to decide whether Train-the-Trainer makes sense for you or your organization.

1

The Basics

What will I be approved to teach?

Successful candidates may become Approved MESS Instructors authorized to deliver MESS Basic using the current MESS curriculum and materials.

How long does Train-the-Trainer take?

Train-the-Trainer is typically completed over three training days. The exact schedule may vary based on the delivery format, cohort, and organizational needs.

How is the training offered?

Train-the-Trainer may be delivered live online or in person. Cohorts are generally designed for 6–12 candidates, although customized arrangements may be available.

Approved Instructor status is maintained on a three-year cycle, subject to the Approved Instructor Agreement and current program requirements.

2

The Business Side

Can this save my organization money?

Yes. Organizations that regularly need MESS Basic can build internal training capacity, reduce dependence on outside facilitation, and schedule training when their people need it.

Can I teach independently and earn income?

Yes. Approved Instructors may be compensated for delivering MESS Basic, including through freelance teaching opportunities, within the terms of their Approved Instructor Agreement.

Example Class Revenue

An instructor charging $250–$275 per participant for a 20-hour MESS Basic class with 12 participants would generate:

$3,000–$3,300 in gross class revenue

After the $790 minimum MESS class and licensing fees, that leaves $2,210–$2,510 before travel, venue, technology, taxes, and other delivery expenses.

In-person travel and related expenses should be addressed separately in the training agreement with the hosting organization.

What does it cost each time I teach MESS Basic?

Under the pay-as-you-go structure, each class includes:

$250 class registration + $45 per participant

The licensing fee is based on a 12-participant minimum .

Minimum MESS fee: $790 per class.
Prefer one-time, bulk licensing fee?
See "Ongoing Partnership" below.

3

The Ongoing Partnership

Is there an alternative to paying class-by-class?

Yes. Organizations anticipating regular use may choose a customized three-year, limited-use agreement rather than the standard pay-as-you-go structure.

Contact MESS Ministries to explore which option makes the most financial sense for your organization.

What support will I receive after approval?

Approved Instructors receive current curriculum and materials, course-delivery guidance, program updates, coaching and instructional support, and access to MESS registration and certificate processes.

Business-side coaching is also available to help newer instructors think through pricing, agreements, travel, expenses, and sustainable training opportunities.

What is expected of an Approved Instructor?

Instructors agree to protect the integrity of MESS Basic, use current authorized materials, and follow applicable instructional, ethical, registration, and program standards.

What happens at the end of three years?

Continued authorization is based on the renewal requirements in effect at that time. MESS Ministries will provide current renewal information and help instructors identify their next right step.
