Be Compassionate. Be Capable.

Equipping Those
Called to Care

We help communities build programs and strengthen people needed to provide skillful mental, emotional, and spiritual care.

WHAT IS MESS?

Strengthen Helping Programs
Equip Helping People

We help organizations start, strengthen, and sustain support programs while training helpers to provide skillful mental, emotional, and spiritual care to people in need.

We exist to equip those called to care.
HOW WE EQUIP CARE

One Shared Framework:
The MESS 6-Part Protocol©

Every MESS training is built around the same practical, repeatable framework. The helping posture and skills may change with the moment, but these six parts help people provide compassionate, capable care.

1

Show Up

With compassionate presence and an appropriate helping posture.

2

Lean In

By asking, listening, and exploring for deeper understanding.

3

Listen Out

For what matters most to the person in this moment.

4

Provide Care

With care matched to the person’s needs and current capacity.

5

Kindle Hope

By introducing possibility and supporting the next right action.

6

Follow Up and/or Refer

By continuing caring connection and/or sharing appropriate resources.

THE TRAINING DIFFERENCE

The Main Difference
Is the Brain Difference

We teach helpers to respond to the person based on what they can process, absorb, and act on in the moment—not based on what the helper knows or wants to communicate.

As the person’s capacity changes, the helping posture and toolkit must change too.

One brain. Two capacities. One protocol©. Two toolkits.

THE WHY

Love Draws Closer

We believe isolation deepens pain, while love moves toward pain through compassionate connection. We are called to move closer—not to solve, fix, or rescue, but to participate in healing within ourselves, between one another, and throughout our world.

“We meet people where they are—but love them too much to leave them there.”

The people behind MESS

Real experience, deep compassion, and skilled care.

MESS Ministries was created by Dorie and Joey, two helpers who believe support should be spiritually rooted, ethically grounded, and unreasonably hospitable.

Together, they bring more than 60 years of combined experience in counseling, chaplaincy, and ministry leadership — and since 2011, they've built and delivered training across federal, state, local, nonprofit, and faith-based systems.

What they share, underneath all of it, is a deep commitment to helping helpers care for self while caring for others.

What helpers are saying

Practical, compassionate, and immediately useful.

MESS trainings are designed to help caring people grow in clarity, confidence, and skill as they support others.

I have to say your class was great. I’ve been doing this for a long time, but I learned so much and was even challenged to make changes in my old school approach.

I promise you, you will not get bored! I learned so much — more than I thought I would in just two and a half days. I feel better equipped now to support people going through it.

Brilliant course. The skills are things we know, but when shown how to effectively coordinate those skills, the outcome is more powerful.
