Not All Helpers Prefer the Same Speed

One of the biggest misunderstandings in helping work is the assumption that every Helper should respond the same way.

But in reality, Helpers often have different strengths, pacing, preferences, and life demands.

Some Helpers love getting an urgent call, dropping everything, and rushing toward people in pain. Others prefer quieter interactions — helping people sort through difficult feelings while also recognizing strengths, growth, and possibility.

At MESS Ministries, we sometimes describe these different helping paces as sprinting or strolling.

Both are necessary.

And for the sake of your own well-being, it’s important to recognize which feels more natural to you — even if you serve in a role that occasionally requires both.

For Those Who Prefer to Sprint

“Sprint Helpers” are often drawn to:

  • emergency,
  • urgent action
  • quick connection,
  • and immediate stabilization.

They often think strategically, logistically, and operationally. They are adept at planning around the “facts on the ground” while remaining flexible when situations shift and new information emerges.

Depending on the size of the emergency, they are often considering not only the needs of one individual, but the broader impact on everyone involved — including affected individuals, personnel, volunteers, and responders in the field.

Sprint Helpers are often tactical thinkers who enjoy working within coordinated teams and organized response efforts.

Sprint Helpers often thrive in:

  • crisis response,
  • disaster response,
  • emergency ministry,
  • rapid check-ins,
  • and other fast-moving environments.

They often feel drawn toward:

  • critical incidents and hard moments,
  • organizing immediate action,
  • helping people regain clarity,
  • and stabilizing overwhelming situations.

These Helpers are often energized by movement and momentum. Not chaos.
But purpose-driven action that brings relief, direction, and stabilization to people in immediate need.

For Those Who Prefer to Stroll

“Stroll Helpers” are often drawn to:

  • deeper conversations,
  • relational connection,
  • long-term growth,
  • and sustained care over time.

They often prefer one-on-one conversations in quieter spaces, excited to explore what is happening beneath the surface. They are not intimidated by big feelings like anger, grief, fear, or sadness.

They ask questions because they genuinely want to understand “what’s really going on.”

And much like Dorothy discovering the deeper truths within herself and those around her on the yellow brick road, Stroll Helpers often recognize that people already possess the capacity for growth, hope, healing, and change. They simply value walking alongside others for a season as those strengths are rediscovered and developed.

They love celebrating small wins while also making space for deep losses.

Stroll Helpers often thrive in:

  • ongoing support,
  • mentoring,
  • spiritual care,
  • peer support and peer counseling,
  • coaching,
  • and resilience-building.

They often prefer:

  • listening deeply,
  • exploring thoughts and feelings,
  • helping people process experiences,
  • and encouraging growth over time.

These Helpers are often energized by connection and meaning. Not speed. But presence.
